The primary responsibility of the position will be to partake in the implementation and execution of a recurrent mass selection pre-breeding program for hard red winter wheat with strong focus on intensive phenotypic (seedling and adult plant) selection and molecular marker-aided selection to increase the frequency of genes for cold-hardiness, insensitivity to Stagonospora nodorum and tan spot, resistance to the rusts and fusarium head blight. The fellow will be strongly involved with the coordination of program activities; the execution of routine molecular marker analyses; seedling disease infection and symptom evaluation; cold-hardiness screening tests; greenhouse planting and harvesting; making of crosses; field planting, testing, data recording and harvesting. Apart from these primary responsibilities, the fellow may at times be required to participate in activities of the broader winter wheat breeding program, doubled haploid production, specific research projects or graduate student projects. Continued employment will be contingent on satisfactory job performance and funding.Minimum Qualifications:1. PhD in Plant Breeding, Genetics or Molecular Biology 2. Thorough knowledge and experience of plant breeding methodologies 3. Experience executing basic molecular marker techniques 4. Effective oral and written communication skills 5. Ability to coordinate activities, plan ahead and work independentlyPreferred Qualifications:1. Experience with disease symptom evaluation 2. Experience with wheat breeding/research 3. Experience with high-throughput marker-aided selection 4. Experience with field and greenhouse experimentation 5.
